Let's Talk Supplements
Last week, I did an Instagram story (or short novel) about the different supplements that I take on a daily basis. While this isn't an exhaustive list, so many of you reached out and asked for more detail, so without further ado, here is a hard-copy of the information I shared in passing! Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions, and let me know of any supplements you love, as well! Most of the supplements I'm sharing can be found on Thrive Market, and if you use this link and join as a member, you'll get great savings!
Why are supplements important?
First and foremost, I believe in getting your nutrients from a whole foods diet, or a Whole Foods diet, if you're obsessed with the grocery store like me! However, it's also important to realize that our diets can be lacking, and the things we choose to supplement should be intentional and complementary to our food intake. Brands do matter, and unfortunately for the bargain shoppers out there, cheap vitamins don't hold a candle to the more expensive ones that actually create a positive impact on your health. You can skimp on your health now, but you'll be paying for it in medical bills later. Most young people (and old people, if we're being honest) don't spend enough time investing in their health and learning about it, which is why disease runs rampant in the American culture, as a result of the American diet. Budget for your health, and your body will thank you!
My Favorite Supplements
1. Probiotics
Finding a good probiotic is crucial for your digestive health. Fermented food, such as yogurt, kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi, etc., contains probiotics, but not everyone likes and/or can eat fermented food on a daily basis. Probiotics populate your gut with good bacteria, and they are living microorganisms. You want to find a brand that really cares about the strains of bacteria contained in their probiotics so that you can be sure that they are alive and ready to get up in your gut - I know, sounds appetizing. I use Jarrow Formulas!

2. Vitamin B Complex
Vitamin B deficiencies are all-too common, and we need a good B complex. Vitamin B helps keep us energized, promotes a strong metabolism, minimizes stress, fights free radicals, boosts good cholesterol, and gives us biotin for strong hair, skin, and nails. I also use a Jarrow Formulas B complex!

3. Evening Primrose Oil
This one is a favorite of mine, and I always notice dramatic results when I am consistent with taking it. Evening Primrose Oil helps regulate hormones and is a great help for those of us with irregular cycles or uncomfortable symptoms before/during your period. I am not a believer in hormonal birth control because it slaps a bandaid on your problems, instead of regulating your hormones and eliminating the underlying issues. Hormonal imbalances effect all areas of our lives, but they can be especially problematic if you have come off of birth control and are trying to conceive. No matter your phase of life, Evening Primrose Oil can help get your hormones in balance!

4. Turmeric
I love using turmeric in my food, but I don't remember to eat it every day! But, it is something that is a great addition to your daily diet because of its anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting properties. "Turmeric is derived from the rhizomes (underground stems) of the plant Curcuma longa, a member of the ginger family. Curcumin, which has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, is the most active constituent of turmeric." -www.turmerical.com
Price: $34.99 on Turmerical
5. AshwagandhA
Say that one 3 times fast! Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that helps support the immune system and replenish the nervous system to allow you to deal with stress and support your body. I have a capsule form, but you can also find a powder form from Sun Potion.
Price: $14.95 on Thrive Market
6. Cordyceps and Reishi
Both cordyceps and reishi are adaptogenic herbs derived from mushrooms. Again, they help with immune support, stress, fatigue, and much more, and you can find them in powder or capsule form. I take a combined capsule from Host Defense.
